Dealing with depression
Everyone feels down at some point – this is a normal reaction as unfortunately we can’t feel happy all the time! However if you feel sad most of the time and this seems to go on for ages, it could be the first sign of depression.
Causes of depression
Life is full of changes and challenges and can be really hard. There may be lots of reasons why you feel depressed.
For example:
- Someone close to you dying or leaving
- Arguing a lot with friends or family
- Pressure to prove yourself in exams
- Bullying/peer pressure
- Worrying about money
- Moving country, house or staring a new school
- Feelings of uncertainty around your sexuality
- Self appearance/esteem
- A serious illness
- Skin problems and acne
Symptoms of depression
If you're depressed you may be:
- upset and crying a lot
- moody and irritable
- worried and anxious
- critical of yourself and the way you look
- eating and sleeping too much or too less
- less interested in doing things you used to enjoy
- spending more time alone and not with your friends
Alcohol and drugs can seem to provide an escape from your problems, but can create an extra layer of difficulty if your use of them becomes excessive.
Living with depression is common and, in the UK, affects about 20 per cent of people aged between 16 and 24. In fact, many famous people have had depression, such as Russell Brand, Katie Price/Jordon and Robbie Williams.
Little ways to help yourself
- Keep your mind busy. Do exercise, join a gym or go for a swim, it will cheer you up
- Before going to bed try a relaxing herbal tea or a hot milky drink to wind down, for a restful sleep
- Sorry, but alcohol will exaggerate your mood. If you are feeling down it will only make you feel worse
- Make sure you have a well balanced diet. This will improve your energy (and skin)
- Use aromatherapy oils such as lavender, rose, ylang ylang and clary sage
- Try eating turkey, bananas, nuts and drinking milk as these contain tryptophan that can uplift your mood
- Consult your doctor for advice on available therapies or medication
